#5 - How to Clean Plastic Headlight Lenses

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

What you will need:

1. Turtle Wax Headlight lens restorer kit
2. 3M rubbing compound
3. Turtle Wax ICE clear liquid car wax
4. blue painter's tape
5. electric car buffer (use the terrycloth cover)
6. bucket of soapy water and a few rags
7. hose with running water

A. First off, do NOT follow directions on the restorer kit. Put blue painter's tape on the car finish near the lenses so you won't damage the car's finish.

B. Wet the lenses with the hose, then use rags to wash them well with the soapy water. Dry the lenses with a rag.

C. Use the spray lubricant included in the kit to spray one of the lenses, then buff it well with the electric buffer (takes about 2 minutes of buffing). Repeat on other lens.

D. Apply rubbing compound to one of the lenses, and let it dry slightly. Buff it well with the electric buffer (takes about 2 minutes of buffing). Repeat on other lens. If your lenses are really cloudy, do this step twice.

E. Spray more lubricant from the kit on each lens and buff well with the buffer. Wash both lenses well with soapy water and rinse them with the hose. Dry them with a rag.

F. Apply lens clarifying compound from the kit to each lens. Buff with the buffer for about 2 minutes on each lens.

G. Use the spray lubricant included in the kit to spray one of the lenses, then buff it well with the electric buffer. Repeat on other lens.

H. Apply the clearcoat liquid wax to each lens. This is where the lenses will become crystal clear.
