#5 - How to Clean Plastic Headlight Lenses

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

What you will need:

1. Turtle Wax Headlight lens restorer kit
2. 3M rubbing compound
3. Turtle Wax ICE clear liquid car wax
4. blue painter's tape
5. electric car buffer (use the terrycloth cover)
6. bucket of soapy water and a few rags
7. hose with running water

A. First off, do NOT follow directions on the restorer kit. Put blue painter's tape on the car finish near the lenses so you won't damage the car's finish.

B. Wet the lenses with the hose, then use rags to wash them well with the soapy water. Dry the lenses with a rag.

C. Use the spray lubricant included in the kit to spray one of the lenses, then buff it well with the electric buffer (takes about 2 minutes of buffing). Repeat on other lens.

D. Apply rubbing compound to one of the lenses, and let it dry slightly. Buff it well with the electric buffer (takes about 2 minutes of buffing). Repeat on other lens. If your lenses are really cloudy, do this step twice.

E. Spray more lubricant from the kit on each lens and buff well with the buffer. Wash both lenses well with soapy water and rinse them with the hose. Dry them with a rag.

F. Apply lens clarifying compound from the kit to each lens. Buff with the buffer for about 2 minutes on each lens.

G. Use the spray lubricant included in the kit to spray one of the lenses, then buff it well with the electric buffer. Repeat on other lens.

H. Apply the clearcoat liquid wax to each lens. This is where the lenses will become crystal clear.

#4 - Remove Musty Smell From Vacuum Cleaner

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

If you have a vacuum cleaner that uses a bag, place a scented dryer sheet inside of the vacuum bag. It will remove the musty smell from the bag. Do NOT put a dryer sheet in a bagless vacuum.

#3 - Cleaning Windows

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

If your windows are really dirty (especially on the outside of the windows after winter), try cleaning them with car winshield fluid. Once you have the worst of the dirt off, you can then use your favorite household window cleaner to get them squeaky clean.

#2 - Refrigerator Maintenance

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

You should clean the back/bottom of your refrigerator a few times a year to get rid of dirt and dust that can interfere with the operation of your refrigerator. For old refrigerators, the coils will be located on the back of the refrigerator. In this case, unplug the refrigerator and place a damp cloth on the floor to catch dust and debris (just when cleaning). Use a small paint brush (one with soft bristles) or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Start at the top of the coils and gently brush any dirt and dust off of them. Continue all the way down to the bottom of the coils. The damp cloth will catch most of the dirt and dust. When finished, clean up any mess and plug the refrigerator back in.

For newer refrigerators, there is a kick plate on the bottom front of the refrigerator. Unplug the refrigerator, remove the kick plate and wash the kick plate with soapy water (and then dry it). With the kick plate removed, place a damp cloth on the floor under the refrigerator. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to carefully vacuum up dirt and dust underneath (but don't touch the condensor or the fan). Using a flashlight, use a paintbrush with soft bristles to lightly remove dust from the condensor and the fan blades. Alternately, if you have a vacuum with a reverse switch, you can lightly blow off dust and dirt using the blower on the vacuum and then clean up the dust and dirt from the floor. When finished, replace the kick plate and plug the refrigerator back in.

#1 - Save Heating Oil in the Spring and Summer

(by Charles McNevich Jr.)

If you have oil heat and oil hot water, you can save many gallons of heating oil by turning off the furnace during warmer weather and only turning it back on for a few minutes before you need hot water. When you need hot water for a shower, to run your dishwasher, etc., turn the furnace on until you get hot water (about 5 minutes). Turn the furnace back off when you are finished. This way you are not burning fuel oil 24 hours a day when you just need to run the furnace now and then during warm weather to get hot water.
